Teaching English in Sri Lanka

Starting from October 2016, students studying English at the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz had the opportunity to assist local English teachers at Vocational Training Centres in the North and East of Sri Lanka. These centres are supported by the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ).

As the Constitution of Sri Lanka regards English as a linking language, the students’ stay was accredited as a stay abroad in an English-speaking country as required by the regulations for obtaining an English degree at Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz. After an introductory period in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, the students were accompanied to their designated centres. GIZ assisted the students in finding suitable accommodation close to the centres they work in and the students were given a monthly allowance by GIZ.

The Vocational Training in the North and East of Sri Lanka Project (VTN), which has been implemented by GIZ, will come to a close by the end of this year. This means that the collaboration between GIZ and JGU will have to pause from October 2018 till at least April 2019. Owing to these administrative changes, there cannot be a new intake of students for October 2018.

GIZ has the intention to launch a new project related to vocational training in Sri Lanka starting in January 2019 and has expressed an interest to resume the ‘Teaching English in Sri Lanka Project’ activities. In a meeting in Sri Lanka with the Sri Lankan English teaching staff and GIZ this summer, the nature of a continuation of a collaboration has been discussed.

We hope to be able to send the next group of JGU students to Sri Lanka by October 2019.

If you are interested in joining the ‘Teaching English in Sri Lanka Project’ in the future, please stay tuned!

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact the project coordinator!
